Meet Rey

Rey Azofeifa always wanted to be an artist. He never expected to help shape and mold people’s character by inspiring a love for God. Born and raised in the capital city of Costa Rica, Rey grew up loving art, comics, drawing and music. "Any music I could get my hands on, but guitar was my first love," he said.

He accepted the calling of Worship Leader for a start-up church near his hometown, and later filled in as head pastor for 5 years. It was during this time when he knew there was something more he needed to do that went beyond drawing and music. "I felt led to reach out to people, minister to them and guide them in their commitment to a Christian life," Rey said.

He met his wife Jennie in what he calls a divine appointment. (She was a missionary from San Diego, taking guitar lessons from Rey’s friend.) They connected immediately and later moved to California, where Jennie used to be involved in North Coast’s 20-something ministry. After attending for a couple weeks, Rey introduced himself to Pastor Chris Brown. "I was so impressed with his sermon that day, but what really got me was his energy after," he said. "A few weeks later I met him at his office to talk about the potential of a Spanish ministry, and was so encouraged by his enthusiasm." That was almost one year ago this month.

Today, Rey is the Spanish Pastor (or Pastor of Spanish Ministries) at North Coast Church. On campus for only 9 months, he is most impressed with the energy of the church, the growing numbers of people coming in to check it out, the resources that have become available and the clear enthusiasm from others when he shares about the Spanish Venue option at 11am on Sundays.

What are you most excited about in your new position as the Spanish Pastor?
I love the challenge of beginning a new ministry, and specifically outreaching to Hispanics/Spanish-speakers in the area. Since I am Latino myself, I'm excited about seeing people of my own culture become disciples of Jesus, and to grow in their potential to serve others.

Why is now the time to begin a Spanish Ministry at North Coast Church?
I believe this time was not appointed by us, but by the Lord. This ministry has been in the hearts of many people for a long time, but this is the year the Lord has brought together a team of people (not just my wife and I, but several other couples and individuals) that are passionate and committed to reaching our Hispanic neighbors for Christ.

What does the future look like for the Spanish Ministry?
There is so much potential for this Spanish Ministry to have a huge impact on our neighboring communities. To accomplish this, we need to use strategies that resonate with a people whose culture, language and outlook on life is different from the average American. We want to offer a "Latino flavor" not just during our Sunday service, but also when we outreach to and care for this community. I see Spanish-speaking people coming to a safe environment where they are encouraged in their journey with Jesus, and where they find meaningful relationships that will give them a sense of community.

What does "Latino Flavor" mean?
We want them to feel welcomed not just by the language that we speak, but how we act. They act loud, with their hearts. We want to speak their language verbally, but also their language culturally. We want to extend hugs and kisses, and let them know it’s OK to touch. We want them to feel at home not only because their native tongue is spoken, but because they feel the culture all around them, and they feel the love.

How can English-speaking attendees help support this ministry?
First, by praying. Then, by embracing our Latino people as part of the church. Do not be afraid to use your Spanish (rusty or not!) when you walk around the venue (11am Sundays in The Chapel). And finally, by inviting Latino friends, or even Latinos you have contact with, to our weekend service.

What one word describes the energy during Sunday @ 11am in The Chapel?
Excitement

In looking ahead 10 years, what is your goal for the Spanish Ministry here at North Coast?
My goal is to develop a Spanish Ministry that is self-supported, making disciples of Jesus, impacting the Hispanic community not only of Vista but beyond, and being a strong influence to the Spanish-speaking Christian community of this country. I want to see our service move from The Chapel to The Edge in order to contain the many Spanish-speakers that will worship Jesus at North Coast Church! I also see many Spanish-speaking Growth Groups throughout Vista, and the surrounding cities.

Just for Fun:

  • Favorite snack food? Doritos
  • Favorite band or music? Eclectic – Acoustic and Classic Rock are a must!
  • Where can we find you on a day off? At the beach eating a carne asada burrito.
  • Favorite menu item at the Corner Café? Anything that includes chips…Doritos, of course!
