Food for Thought
For the week of January 6, 2008
(Questions and Scriptures for further study)

1. This weekend Larry mentioned that there are over 30 “one another” commands in the New Testament that are hard or nearly impossible to fulfill in a large group setting or by yourself. Here are a few of them. After reading each verse below, identify the “one another” command in each one.

John 13:34-35
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. [35] By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."  [NIV]

Romans 12:10
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. [NIV]

Romans 12:16
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. [NIV]

Romans 14:13
Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way. [NIV]

Romans 15:7
Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. [NIV]

Romans 15:14
I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another. [NIV]

Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. [NIV]

1 Corinthians 12:25
so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. [NIV]

Galatians 5:13
You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. [NIV]

Ephesians 4:32
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. [NIV]

Ephesians 5:21
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. [NIV]

Colossians 3:9
Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices  [NIV]

1 Thessalonians 5:15
Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. [NIV]

Hebrews 3:13
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. [NIV]

Hebrews 10:24
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. [NIV]

Hebrews 10:25
Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching. [NIV]

James 4:11
Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. [NIV]

James 5:16
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. [NIV]

 2. These “one another” commands are best carried out within the framework of a church or group that is small enough for close and accountable relationships.  Are there any steps you need to take to develop these kinds of relationships in your own life? Is joining a Growth Group a good step for you?

3. This weekend we saw that one of the key ingredients for spiritual growth is the Holy Spirit. A potential hindrance to His power and motivation working in our lives is the sinful and self-centered nature we are all born with. Galatians 5:16-26 describes the conflict between the two.

Galatians 5:16-26
So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. [17] For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. [18] But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.
[19] The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; [20] idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions [21] and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
[22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. [24] Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. [25] Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. [26] Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. [NIV]

What contrasting behaviors characterize the Spirit and the sinful nature? How do these behaviors correspond to the “one anothers” listed above?

What does this passage say about what the believer’s responsibility is for living in the Spirit?
