A REALITY CHECK:

1 Corinthians 7:28

    But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this. [NIV]

1 Corinthians 7:32-35

    I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs--how he can please the Lord. [33] But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world--how he can please his wife-- [34] and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord's affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world--how she can please her husband. [35] I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord. [NIV]

Ephesians 5:21

    Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. [NIV]

FOR HUSBANDS:

Matthew 20:25-28

    Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. [26] Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, [27] and whoever wants to be first must be your slave-- [28] just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." [NIV]

1 Peter 3:7-9

    Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
    [8] Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. [9] Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. [NIV]

Proverbs 30:21-23

    "Under three things the earth trembles,
        under four it cannot bear up:
    [22] a servant who becomes king,
        a fool who is full of food,
    [23] an unloved woman who is married,
        and a maidservant who displaces her mistress. [NIV]

Song of Solomon 2:8-13

    Listen! My lover!
        Look! Here he comes,
    leaping across the mountains,
        bounding over the hills.
    [9] My lover is like a gazelle or a young stag.
        Look! There he stands behind our wall,
    gazing through the windows,
        peering through the lattice.
    [10] My lover spoke and said to me,
        "Arise, my darling,
        my beautiful one, and come with me.
    [11] See! The winter is past;
        the rains are over and gone.
    [12] Flowers appear on the earth;
        the season of singing has come,
    the cooing of doves
        is heard in our land.
    [13] The fig tree forms its early fruit;
        the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.
    Arise, come, my darling;
        my beautiful one, come with me." [NIV]

FOR WIVES:

Ephesians 5:22-23

    Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. [23] For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. [NIV]

Philippians 2:1-11

    If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, [2] then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. [3] Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. [4] Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
    [5] Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

    [6] Who, being in very nature God,
        did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
    [7] but made himself nothing,
        taking the very nature of a servant,
        being made in human likeness.
    [8] And being found in appearance as a man,
        he humbled himself
        and became obedient to death--
            even death on a cross!
    [9] Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
        and gave him the name that is above every name,
    [10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
        in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
    [11] and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
        to the glory of God the Father. [NIV]

Proverbs 31:10-12

     A wife of noble character who can find?
        She is worth far more than rubies.
    [11] Her husband has full confidence in her
        and lacks nothing of value.
    [12] She brings him good, not harm,
        all the days of her life. [NIV]

Proverbs 31:28-31

    Her children arise and call her blessed;
        her husband also, and he praises her:
    [29] "Many women do noble things,
        but you surpass them all."
    [30] Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
        but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
    [31] Give her the reward she has earned,
        and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. [NIV]

FOR MARRIAGES:

1 Corinthians 13:1-8

    If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. [2] If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. [3] If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
    [4] Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. [5] It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. [6] Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. [7] It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
    [8] Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. [NIV]

Proverbs 18:1-2

    An unfriendly man pursues selfish ends;
        he defies all sound judgment.
    [2] A fool finds no pleasure in understanding
        but delights in airing his own opinions. [NIV]

Romans 12:9-16

    Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. [10] Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. [11] Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. [12] Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. [13] Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
    [14] Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. [15] Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. [16] Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. [NIV]

Genesis 2:23-24

    The man said,
   "This is now bone of my bones
        and flesh of my flesh;
    she shall be called 'woman,'
        for she was taken out of man."
[24] For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. [NIV]
