Growth Group Homework
For the week of April 6, 2008

Welcome to the spring quarter of Growth Groups!  This quarter is nine weeks and will conclude the week of June 1.  At this week’s meeting, along with the homework, you’ll share a potluck meal and review your Growth Group Covenant together.  With that in mind, the homework has been abbreviated. Have a great quarter!

MY STORY
1.  If you could pick only one of the San Diego area destinations below to spend an entire day, which one would it be and why?

* Multi-plex movie theater                                    * Oceanside Beach @ the Pier
* Downtown San Diego & Harbor Area            * Mall
* Julian                                                                   * Tijuana

2.  This week we heard about the keys to being a positive spiritual influence.  Looking back at your own spiritual journey, can you think of any positive attitudes or actions you received from others that helped you along the way?

3.  Looking back at this week’s teaching on “Three Keys To Sharing Your Life” was there a statement, point or insight that was particularly helpful, challenging or confusing to you personally?

DIGGING DEEPER
1.  At some point we’ve all experienced the power and influence of our own words and words of others.  As you read each passage, write down how it describes the influence of our words.  Is there one that is more important for you to remember than the others?  If so, why?

Proverbs 10:19
When words are many, sin is not absent,
but he who holds his tongue is wise. [NIV]
Proverbs 12:6
The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood,
but the speech of the upright rescues them. [NIV]
Proverbs 15:1
A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger. [NIV]
Proverbs 22:11
He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious
will have the king for his friend. [NIV]
Proverbs 6:2-4
if you have been trapped by what you said,
ensnared by the words of your mouth,
[3] then do this, my son, to free yourself,
since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands:
    Go and humble yourself;
press your plea with your neighbor!
[4] Allow no sleep to your eyes,
no slumber to your eyelids. [NIV]

2.  Another aspect of being a positive spiritual influence is being able to tune in to the needs of others.  How might Jesus’ reaction to the needs of the people in Matthew 9:35-38 look in our everyday lives?  Can you think of ways someone can develop the ability to respond as Jesus did in this passage?

Matthew 9:35-38
Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. [36] When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. [37] Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. [38] Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." [NIV]

 TAKING IT HOME
1.
Looking back at this week’s teaching we can see that sharing our life takes character (living a life that promotes questions and reflects the character of Jesus), courage (willing to respond to the opportunities God provides), and connection (having relationships with those who don’t know Jesus).  Looking at your own life, is there one of these you think would be important to develop in the next few months?

2.  Is there any other point from this weekend’s teaching and study you would like to apply, or person you would like to pray for?

3.  As we begin the spring quarter, what do you hope to get out of your time in Growth Group this next quarter?
