Growth Group Homework
For the week of March 16, 2008

This week is the final meeting of the Winter Quarter. (Note: This is not the final meeting for the College groups and Introductory Growth Groups.)  Your Growth Group homework has been shortened to allow you time to celebrate Communion together and reflect on how God has worked this past quarter.  The Spring Growth Group Quarter meets for 9 weeks and begins the week of April 6 and goes through June

MY STORY
1.
Describe your first job - what you liked about it, what you didn't, and anything else that comes to mind.

 2.  People approach work with a variety of different perspectives and attitudes. How was work approached in the home you grew up in? (Pick any that apply.)

<>  Work then play

<>  Play then work

<>  Stressful

<>  Orderly and on task

<>  A source of significance

<>  As little as possible

<>  All consuming

<>  Naps are important

<>  Little time to relax

<>  All about the money

<>  A way to provide security

<>  High energy and always ready for more

<>  Innovative

<>  Do it right or don't do it at all

<>  Excellence at all costs

Now go back and put a "?" next to the ones you think are now a part of your world.  Are there any changes or similarities from when you were younger to now?

DIGGING DEEPER
1.  This week we heard about the importance of our attitude and our willingness to do what our boss says even if he or she is a jerk.  What strategies or motivations do the following verses give us about working with the authority figures in our life?

Proverbs 16:4
The Lord works out everything for his own ends--
even the wicked for a day of disaster. [NIV]

Proverbs 20:2-3
    A king's wrath is like the roar of a lion;
he who angers him forfeits his life.
[3] It is to a man's honor to avoid strife,
but every fool is quick to quarrel. [NIV]

Proverbs 27:18
He who tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,
and he who looks after his master will be honored. [NIV]

1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, [12] so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. [NIV]

Is one of these more important for you to remember than the other?  If so, explain.

2.  Read Matthew 18:21-35.  How do the principles in this passage apply to you in the workplace as either a boss or a subordinate?  Is there any situation you have worked through, or that you need to work through now, that is similar to what this passage talks about?   If so, explain.

Matthew 18:21-35
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?"
[22] Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
[23] "Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. [24] As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. [25] Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
[26] "The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything.' [27] The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
[28] "But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded.
[29] "His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'
[30] "But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. [31] When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.
[32] "Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. [33] Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' [34] In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
[35] "This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart." [NIV]

TAKING IT HOME
Looking back at this week's teaching and study or the entire quarter with your Growth Group, can you think of any ways you have been encouraged to live out more faithfully Christ's character or to love better those you work with, and/or encounter daily?

God's ultimate work in our life and His love for us is exhibited through the sacrifice He made on the cross. Communion is one way we remind ourselves of all that He has done and all He's calling us to become.  This week your Growth Group will conclude by taking Communion together.  To prepare for this, take a moment to read 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 and 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 reflecting on the significance of Christ's sacrificial love in your own life.

1 Corinthians 15:1-8
Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. [2] By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
[3] For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, [4] that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, [5] and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. [6] After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. [7] Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, [8] and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. [NIV]

1 Corinthians 11:23-26
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, [24] and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." [25] In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." [26] For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. [NIV]

Take a moment to write a quick note of thanks to God for what He has done for you.
