TODAY’S VERSE:

Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. [NIV]

BEFORE YOU SPEAK: FIVE PROFOUND QUESTIONS

Proverbs 10:11
The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. [NIV]

Proverbs 10:19
When words are many, sin is not absent,
but he who holds his tongue is wise. [NIV]

Proverbs 15:28
The heart of the righteous weighs its answers,
but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil. [NIV]

Proverbs 29:11
A fool gives full vent to his anger,
but a wise man keeps himself under control. [NIV]

1) Is this true?

1 Thessalonians 2:5
You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed--God is our witness. [NIV]

Proverbs 29:5
Whoever flatters his neighbor
is spreading a net for his feet. [NIV]

2) Is this appropriate for THIS situation?

Proverbs 10:32
The lips of the righteous know what is fitting,
but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse. [NIV]

Proverbs 12:25
An anxious heart weighs a man down,
but a kind word cheers him up.  [NIV]

Proverbs 25:20
Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day,
or like vinegar poured on soda,
is one who sings songs to a heavy heart. [NIV]

Proverbs 16:21
The wise in heart are called discerning,
and pleasant words promote instruction. [NIV]

Proverbs 11:12
A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor,
but a man of understanding holds his tongue. [NIV]

Proverbs 29:11
A fool gives full vent to his anger,
but a wise man keeps himself under control. [NIV]

1 Timothy 5:1
Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, [NIV]

3) Will these words be heard?

Proverbs 9:8
Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you;
rebuke a wise man and he will love you.  [NIV]

Matthew 7:6
"Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces. [NIV]

Proverbs 25:11-12
A word aptly spoken
is like apples of gold in settings of silver.
[12] Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold
is a wise man's rebuke to a listening ear.  [NIV]

4) Is my motivation to help or hurt?

Proverbs 12:18
Reckless words pierce like a sword,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing. [NIV]

Proverbs 27:5-6
Better is open rebuke
than hidden love.
[6] Wounds from a friend can be trusted,
but an enemy multiplies kisses. [NIV]

1 Peter 3:9
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. [NIV]

James 3:9-12
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. [10] Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. [11] Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? [12] My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. [NIV]

5) Is this my responsibility?

Proverbs 26:17
Like one who seizes a dog by the ears
is a passer-by who meddles in a quarrel not his own. [NIV]

Leviticus 19:17
" 'Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt. [NIV]

Luke 17:3
So watch yourselves.
"If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. [NIV]

Proverbs 24:11-12
Rescue those being led away to death;
hold back those staggering toward slaughter.
[12] If you say, "But we knew nothing about this,"
does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does not he who guards your life know it?
Will he not repay each person according to what he has done? [NIV]
