Library

A cozy space where inspiration and adventure is just a page turn away!

Outdoor

Children enter a world where they become sculptors, bakers, or engineers. This rich sensory experience beckons children to create, discover, and connect with nature. Ideas are welcomed, conversations ensue, and theories are tested in a place where learning and play come together.

PHILOSOPHY OF LEARNING

“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.”
– Ephesians 3: 17-1

Inspiration for learning at North Coast Church Preschool is drawn from the Reggio Emilia Approach to Education, which originated in the Italian town of the same name.

Under this philosophy, learning is birthed through a system of relationships between children, their families, their teachers, and their environment. The interactions among these relationships build the scaffolding from which a child constructs an understanding of the world in which he or she lives. This combined with a faith in Christ, richly nourishes and lovingly shapes every element of this community.

The Child

When a child is honored for contributions to a community, respected for innovation, and valued for ideas, that child will demonstrate the capability of constructing his or her own learning, only needing to be supported in this pursuit. Each child holds an innate curiosity which drives their exploration of the world and their place within it. They are born to discover, understand, and make connections. Wonder is inseparable from the countenance of a child. They explore because they wonder, and they wonder because they explore. Wonder defines the purity of childhood. It is the reason why early learning has so much potential to shape the learning for a lifetime.

The Parent

The parent is regarded as the child’s primary and most important teacher. No other person in a child’s life will impart values, truths, and beliefs to the degree that a parent will. They are respected and valued for this sacred role they play. As a parent partners in the learning process, they help build connections between home and school, give value to the child’s experiences by engaging in them, and enrich the processes and events of the classroom by participating in them. Through the sharing of their gifts, talents, time and resources, they contribute to the quality of the entire learning community.

The Teacher

As the steward of the learning environment and the mentor of the child, the teacher’s primary role is to actively observe the activity of the classroom and intentionally listen to the interests and questions of the children. Teacher observations guide the learning opportunities provided. When a teacher designs a learning space, open areas are created which provide a sense of freedom, and where play and art can be the media by which connections and collaborations occur. The teacher regards time with flexibility, allowing projects to emerge from child-led investigations. Teachers contribute to learning as a partner, offer open-ended questions and the means to find answers, foster a deep connection with nature, support the child in explorations, and emphasize the process over the product of learning.

The Environment

Each space and material in the learning environment inspires discovery and exploration. The purity of natural light through large windows, the calming effect of order in furniture and supplies, the evocativeness of beauty in decor, art, and objects from nature all contribute to a learning environment where learning can be infinite. Its open-endedness suggests endless potential to evolve, based on the children’s interests and pursuits. As the environment itself is utilized as a tool for learning, it encourages communication and collaboration among children and teachers. Over time, the indoor and outdoor space reflects the creativity and experiences of the people who live, learn, and play within it.

MISSION

Grounded in the belief that each child has been uniquely designed by God, we strive to help each child reach his or her God-given potential by providing a safe and nurturing environment that allows for developmental differences and assists parents in the privilege of raising children to know and love God.
